IRS Warns of Back-to-School Tax Scams.

On August 18, 2016 the IRS warned taxpayers against telephone scammers targeting students and parents during the back-to-school season. Scammers have been demanding payments for non-existent taxes, such as the "Federal Student Tax." The IRS is encouraging parents, students, and schools to stay alert, and to avoid providing personal information over the phone. Additionally, keep in mind that generally, the IRS will contact you by mail and will not call you about taxes owed without first mailing you a bill; if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, hang up and call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.
